SUMMARY:Jackson Stokes\, Soul-Rock LIVE underground in the Roots' speakeasy.
DESCRIPTION:Guitarist singer-songwriter\, Jackson Stokes\, brings his rock n’roll soul to the Roots’ underground listening room.\nGET TICKETS HERE. \nConnect authentically to the artists by hearing them in our “speakeasy”-styled intimate listening room\, the Roots\, located underground beneath the Canopy social house. Hear the stories behind the songs as the artist(s) share their inspiration and even their heartaches. Doors open at 7:00pm; show starts at 7:30pm; VIP lounge with couches\, booths\, and tables are available to add-on in-store. Locally-sourced craft beer and wine available for purchase. \nFor guitarist and singer-songwriter Jackson Stokes\, great musicians make great neighbors. Even as a youth weaned on classic rock- his first concert was Lynyrd Skynyrd- Stokes was unaware that living across the street from his St. Louis home was guitarist and singer-songwriter Devon Allman. Allman’s family tree is impressive as the son of Gregg Allman and nephew of Duane Allman of Allman Brothers Band fame. Yet\, Stokes knew little of the legendary group. Encouraged by his father\, and holding his guitar\, the 11-year-old Stokes knocked on Allman’s door. \nAllman\, two decades his elder\, heard something special in the young Stokes and encouraged him to continue learning and growing as a musician. Stokes dutifully attended Allman’s Honeytribe rehearsals\, sitting quietly in the corner while the group worked up its repertoire. At 14\, Stokes had developed into a prodigious firebrand with a passion for the blues\, teaming with another area wunderkind\, Marquise Knox\, and performing his first professional gigs. \nBy 18\, his experience playing in high school garage bands\, and with an All-State school jazz band\, expanded his rock-and-roll palette. He attended Drury University in Springfield\, earning a degree in music therapy\, while maintaining a friendship with Allman\, who encouraged Stokes to further sharpen his songwriting skill. In Memphis in 2012\, Allman produced a five-song EP\, Witness\, from the Stokes-led band\, Delta Sol Revival. \nDSR toured regionally until 2016 when Stokes and Allman began discussing recording his solo debut. The pair returned to Memphis for the initial sessions\, as Allman invited Stokes to join the Devon Allman Band for 2017\, and subsequently the Devon Allman Project for a world tour in 2018. On days-off from the road\, Stokes continued work on his album\, organically building the full-length. \nIn May of 2019\, Stokes put the finishing touches on a striking inaugural effort. Produced by Allman\, it is a lean and focused set of rock-and-soul\, including an ambitious Talking Heads cover\, and a depth of original material ranging in style and subjects. From the Memphis stroll of the opening “Can’t Getcha Out\,” through the reflective acoustic closer\, “Take Me Home\,” the debut encompasses Stokes’ wide swath of influences and tastes. There’s the ‘60s R&B update that morphs into modern rock on “Slave\,” the staggering punches of overdriven guitar on “Time is Now\,” and the midnight seduction of “Contents Under Pressure.” A flourish of pleading guitars finishes the slowly climbing blues-rock centerpiece\, “You and Your Partner\,” while David Byrne meets Southern funky on “Life in Wartime.” As well\, Stokes welcomes the sunny-days slide guitar of The Allman Betts Band’s Johnny Stachela to brighten the Southern sway of “Sins Are Forgiven\,” complementing that with the chunky Saturday night blues of “Whiskey.” \nNaturally\, the nine-song record offers plenty of the fiery guitar that has been the calling card of Stokes’ career for this first decade\, showcasing the stellar reputation he’s earned sharing the stage with such icons as Robert Cray\, The Wailers\, and Robert Randolph\, as well as Warren Haynes\, Lukas Nelson\, and Marcus King. Yet\, it’s a conspicuous emphasis on Stokes’ escalating songcraft that also shines as brightly on this initial release. \nGET TICKETS HERE. \n \n  \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:Hughes Taylor :: Acclaimed R&B/Blues LIVE in the Roots
DESCRIPTION:PURCHASE TICKETS HERE. \nAn old soul hailing from Macon Georgia USA\, Hughes Taylor was immediately drawn to the blues when he first picked up the guitar. Today an accomplished guitar player with a voice that is bigger than he is\, Hughes has developed his signature style: a fiery brand of blues-rock whose lineage stretches back to Stevie Ray Vaughan and Cream. \nHughes released his first full-length album of original songs\, Hear My Melody\, in the spring of 2016. After graduating with honors in marketing from University of North Georgia in late 2017\, Hughes released his sophomore album\, Restless\, just before marrying the love of his life in 2018. In the summer of 2019\, The Hughes Taylor Band released a blues album of classics that had influenced Hughes\, lovingly arranged and interpreted by him\, called Good Blues\, Fast. The Hughes Taylor Band is a blues-rock power trio reminiscent of the Jimi Hendrix Experience\, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble\, and Cream; inescapably influenced by Hughes’s hometown heroes\, the Allman Brothers. Consequently\, long improvisations and jams are a staple of any live Hughes Taylor Band performance. \nWith three studio albums and a live album under his belt\, Hughes released his fourth studio album\, Modern Nostalgia\, showcasing his growth as a musician\, songwriter\, and producer. Written during the pandemic and recorded at the legendary Capricorn Sound Studios\, the music on the new record is a sweet mix of blues\, blues-rock\, and southern rock; a modern successor to the great music that put Capricorn on the map many years ago. Modern Nostalgia is OUT NOW. \n \nListen on Spotify. \nPURCHASE TICKETS HERE.

SUMMARY:Nina Ricci & Canon Tyler\, folk-Americana sgr-songwriters LIVE in the Roots
DESCRIPTION:PURCHASE TICKETS HERE. \nNina Ricci\, one of the new guard of the American folk revival\, heralds songs of the 1960s folk movement and writes a new chapter with her own songwriter’s voice. Nina’s artfully crafted songs stand for themselves as lovable woven narratives sung with a confident air and savvy lyricism. Her onstage mien is both endearing and charismatic and she is personable on and off stage. \nNina’s journey in music is ever-unfolding. Her talent has made room for her among music artists such as Carolyn Hester\, John McEuen (The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band\,) and John Paul White (The Civil Wars.) She continues to surprise her peers and audiences through her unique gift of music with songs such as\, “Bird on a String\,” “All the Crown Jewels” (unreleased\,) and\, most recently\, “My Head Is Full of You” (unreleased.) Her voice is often compared with Dolly Parton\, Joan Baez\, and Emmylou Harris\, but it is clear that Nina’s timbre is of singular quality all her own. Her particular brand of finger style playing bears an essence of the folk music she adores\, and her ability for songwriting\, she says\, is “a gift that was given innately and not acquired by effort.” \nNina is a graduate of Berklee College of Music in Boston\, Massachusetts and a native of Nashville\, Tennessee. She has released 2 CDs\, an all-original debut album called ‘Designs On Me’ (2018) and a tribute to her favorite folksinger\, ‘Fare Thee Well: A Joan Baez Tribute’ (2020.) \nAs for her attitude toward performing\, Nina says\, “the audience is as much apart of the performance as she is\,” a mindset she has learned is true over several years of contemplating the teachings of her former professor\, Livingston Taylor (music artist\, and brother of James Taylor\,) who said of her: \n“Nina carries onstage a level of magnetic charisma that I’ve rarely seen equaled in my twenty-five years of teaching. Nina’s focus and discipline make her impossible to ignore……liv taylor” \nOver the last 3 years Nina has spent considerable time on the road performing at various folk festivals\, theme parks\, and music venues. In 2021\, she performed for 3 months at Dollywood in Pigeon Forge\, TN\, and she is kicking off 2022 with a stint at Silver Dollar City in Branson\, MO. \nCanon Tyler is a home grown singer-songwriter from the hills of north Georgia. His songs tell stories of pride\, hope\, hard times and tough breaks as they pertain to life at the fringes of Appalachia. With sonic elements of Bluegrass and contemporary acoustic music\, Tyler’s lyrics blend the storytelling aspects of traditional American folk and the Laurel Canyon era of singer-songwriters. Together these elements create a sound that is both fresh and familiar to fans of roots music. \nWith his first full-length album\, “Hangin’ On”\, Tyler looked to capture the core of each song and employed a stripped back approach to recording. The result is a minimalistic production featuring Canon\, his guitar\, a fiddle and vocal harmonies from long-time live performing partner Emilee Bradford. With no added frills or distractions\, “Hangin’ On” serves up the very heart of each song with a sound as rustic as the Appalachian mountains from which they came. \nConnect authentically to the artists by hearing them in our “speakeasy”-styled intimate listening room\, the Roots\, located underground beneath the Canopy social house. Hear the stories behind the songs as the artist(s) share their inspiration and even their heartaches. Doors open at 7:00pm; show starts at 7:30pm; VIP lounge with couches\, booths\, and tables are available. Reserve by emailing events@canopyandtheroots.com . SUMMARY:Cicada Rhythm\, folk-pop and ramshackle rock\, LIVE at Canopy and the Roots
DESCRIPTION:Purchase tickets HERE. \nWhen Cicada Rhythm hit the road in support of their 2015 debut\, they were a homespun\, stripped-down folk duo\, armed with songs that mixed acoustic instruments and soft dynamics with the intimate charm of two harmonized voices. \nThree years later\, bandmates Andrea DeMarcus and Dave Kirslis have upsized their sound considerably with Everywhere I Go. Recorded in a string of studios across the southeast\, it’s a snapshot of a band on the move\, with new members filling their lineup and a louder set of influences propelling their sound forward. There are roots-rock tunes\, slow waltzes\, politically-minded lyrics\, front-porch folksongs and backwoods ballads\, all delivered by a group of road warriors who’ve cut their teeth not only in the writing room\, but onstage\, too. \n“In the beginning\, we were two singer/songwriters making a living on $50 per show\,” says DeMarcus\, a Juilliard-trained bassist who met Kirslis — her bandmate and future husband — when he hopped off a freight train and landed in her Georgia hometown. The two quickly whipped up a musical chemistry rooted in the steady pluck of DeMarcus’ upright bass\, the rootsy punch of Kirslis’ guitar\, and the raw blend of their voices. As romance blossomed between the musicians\, so did a career. “We had to keep it a duo\,” DeMarcus remembers of their early days on the road\, “because we couldn’t afford to bring along anybody else. When we released our debut record\, we started touring with a drummer\, and the sound just evolved from there. We realized we needed to demand attention\, rather than waiting for people at the shows to shut up.” \nPeople did pay attention\, taking notice of Cicada Rhythm’s ability to merge both traditional and contemporary Americana sounds along with topical lyrics\, which often touched upon modern issues like environmentalism. Among the band’s biggest fans were members of two A-list Americana bands: Kenneth Pattengale\, best known as the spellbinding guitarist and harmony vocalist of the Milk Carton Kids\, and Oliver Wood\, lead singer and guitarist for the Wood Brothers. When it came time to record Cicada Rhythm’s newest batch of songs in 2017\, Pattengale and Wood shared production duties\, giving Everywhere I Go a broad\, diverse punch. \nA sense of forward momentum sweeps its way throughout Everywhere I Go\, whose very title conjures up the image of a band in transit. Kicking off with “America’s Open Roads” and winding to a finish with the Bob Dylan-worthy “Back Home\,” it’s an album written during a time of travel\, of growth\, of being together. Like interstate poets\, DeMarcus and Kirslis write about the country unfolding outside their car window at highway speed\, spinning stories not only about the places they visit\, but personal and social struggles\, as well. \nAn Appalachian-sounding anthem for the female empowerment movement\, “Do I Deserve It Yet” takes a look at the modern woman’s struggle in a man’s world as DeMarcus wails in the chorus\, “Won’t you tell me when I am enough? ‘Cause I can never tell.” “America’s Open Roads” resonates similarly in today’s climate of division and controversial leaders\, with the emotionally hard-hitting opening line\, “Every day starts with a terrible dream.” Although written outside of political context\, these songs took on new meanings once Cicada Rhythm began integrating them into their shows. \n“We were touring up the East Coast one week after the election\, and the nation was visibly shook up\,” says Kirslis\, who shares vocal duties throughout the record. “Suddenly\, a lot of Andrea’s lyrics seemed to have double meanings. The song is about keeping roads open\, rather than build walls over them. As we began playing more and more new songs\, they began paralleling some things that were going on in the outside world.” \nFans of Cicada Rhythm’s debut will remember the socially-conscious “Do Not Destroy\,” an eco-friendly song that urged its listener to take care of the natural world. Much of Everywhere I Go follows in that song’s footsteps\, forming a bridge between the two records. \n“We’re changing\, but we haven’t lost our sincerity\,” DeMarcus adds. “A lot of the songs are still political. They’re emotional. They’re raw\, which has always been an important part of our sound. We haven’t lost our identity; we’ve just grown around it.” \nProducers Pattengale and Wood assisted in that growth by beefing up the band’s sound with strings\, Hammond organ\, electric guitar\, and pedal steel. Working with the producers separately allowed Cicada Rhythm to revisit and revise a number of songs that had already become live staples. “You can’t underestimate the power of a fresh set of ears\,” DeMarcus says. “It’s helpful to know what someone else thinks your song can be\, particularly someone who hasn’t heard the song nightly for the past two months. A lot of the time\, collaboration is the reason something becomes better.” \nEmbracing Everywhere I Go as “a patchwork album\,” Cicada Rhythm tracked its 12 songs in recording studios\, living rooms\, and gospel churches throughout Tennessee and Georgia. Some songs were performed live in the studio and captured on analog tape\, while album highlights like “Even in the Shallows” were tracked more methodically. String sections were added — a nod to DeMarcus’ fondness for the Beatles\, whose own songs often made room for symphonic arrangements — without taking away from the band’s rustic charm. Together\, the album’s track list blends orchestral folk-pop and ramshackle roots-rock in equal numbers\, giving Cicada Rhythm more fuel for their music-filled travels. \n“We named the album after a line in ‘America’s Open Roads\,’ but hopefully\, this album will be our ticket to everywhere we go\,” explains DeMarcus. “Wherever we are\, these songs will be with us.”

SUMMARY:Adam Klein with guitarist\, Bret Hartley :: Multi-Cultural Americana
DESCRIPTION:Purchase tickets HERE. \nAn Atlanta-via-Athens\, Georgia-based singer/songwriter and troubadour\, Adam Klein’s music touches on Americana\, rustic country folk\, folk-rock\, and West African Mande music. He performs in a variety of settings– either solo/duo\, with his band\, Adam Klein & The Wild Fires\, or occasionally with his American roots-meets-West-African-roots project under his Peace Corps name in Mali\, Lassine Kouyate. \n“I killed a stray cat that had been hanging around my yard for a few days\,” Klein says. “It was an accident. I had a hybrid car that was practically silent when it drove. One morning I pulled out of the driveway\, and my wife found it dead on the ground. We figure it had crawled under the car\, didn’t hear the engine turn on\, and I ran over it. I felt pretty bad about it.” \nThe ensuing song Klein wrote about the incident and his likely role in the cat’s death\, is the title track to his new 3-song EP\, Little Tiger\, a collection of outtakes to be released on January 22\, 2021\, from the recording sessions for his 2019 album\, Low Flyin’ Planes. \nFor Low Flyin’ Planes\, Klein teamed up with his longtime producer and engineer Bronson Tew at Dial Back Sound in Water Valley\, Mississippi\, for their third straight record together (following 2013’s Sky Blue DeVille and 2015’s Archer’s Arrow). It’s a strong partnership that continues to bear fruit. Says Klein\, “He’s a close friend and a genius engineer and producer whose role in shaping the sounds and textures of these records and bringing my songs to life can’t be overstated.’You set them up; I’ll knock them down\, he’s said about our musical partnership. And it’s true- these albums are just as much his handiwork as they are mine.” \nKlein considers Low Flyin’ Planes to be the sonic follow-up to Sky Blue DeVille\, and to that end\, the record features sometimes Wild Fires guitarist Crash Cason and former Wild Fire Tew on drums\, guitar\, and harmony vocals. The sound is capably filled out with Matt Patton (Drive-By Truckers) and Stuart Cole (ex-Squirrel Nut Zippers) on bass\, Eric Carlton (Jimbo Mathus) on keys\, Kell Kellum (Young Valley) on pedal steel and guitars\, Will McCarley (Fat Possum Records) on drums\, Hank West (Squirrel Nut Zippers) on sax and trumpet\, Schaefer Llana and Anne Freeman on harmony vocals\, and other ace players from the Oxford\, MS\, scene. The result is a strong\, sincere collection of folk-rock songs featuring Klein’s signature warm vocals colored by a lush\, textured sound. The songs on Little Tiger were recorded at Dial Back Sound\, and produced\, mixed\, and mastered by Tew at Sleepers Mountain in Portland\, Oregon. \nBoth “Little Tiger” and “Take It (On Faith)” were recorded during the LFP sessions. The band stretches out on the latter\, this collection’s closing number\, an energetic song with sweeping harmony vocals which straddles the line of serious and playful as Klein details hopeful and alarming visions alike of a possible individual and collective future. Written in 2015\, the song seems to portend the current state of national affairs (“I take it that all this hatred / I take it that all this strife / is gonna get worked out one day / on a field with guns and knives / I take it on faith”)\, while noting the cyclical nature of things — that which has been will once again come to pass (“I take it that it’s all been said and done and done and said before / writ upon the rocks and sand and the ice and dirt and the ocean floor / I take it on faith”). Ultimately\, as is usually the case in Klein’s songs\, the listener is left with a feeling of hope\, as he declares: “I take it that goodness and graciousness are gonna have the final say.” \n“It’s just a straightforward three-chord song\,” says Klein\, “and you sure can have a good time with that. That may have been the first song we recorded\, and I’m pretty sure it was the first take. Great\, raw energy. We played it one more time\, but quickly realized we caught it right out of the gate.” \n“Little Tiger”\, although shelved from the original album\, stood out as the favorite track among many of the players on the session\, and was rounded out by mellotron compliments of Jay Gonzalez (Drive-By Truckers). “I’ve always sequenced my albums\, but this time Bronson recommended we let Patton do it for LFP\,” says Klein. “That’s one of his favorite parts of the album creation process\, and I definitely trust his instincts and thought it’d be neat to see what he came up with. He drove around with it in his car for a few weeks and sent in a track order that he couldn’t see going any other way. It didn’t include “Little Tiger” or “Take It (On Faith)”\, but I think it was a fitting sequence and the 10-song album was already a 45-minute or so listen.” \nThe EP kicks off with “Halfway to Heaven”\, a song intended for inclusion on LFP but which wasn’t recorded during the album sessions. “It was always a key song for me from the collection\, and a companion piece to the title track\,” Klein offers. “I thought we’d just put it on the opposite side of the record from the song “Low Flyin’ Planes”\, but given its similarities in terms of the tuning\, the sound\, and even the progression\, we decided to no even record it at the time and kick it down the road a bit.” \nRecorded on a subsequent visit to Dial Back Sound and to the Mississippi Delta\, “Halfway to Heaven” features Klein on acoustic guitar and vocals\, Tew on acoustic and electric guitars\, bass\, drums\, and harmony vocals\, and Gonzalez on Wurlitzer. The song directly expresses the main themes and questions of Low Flyin’ Planes. “I had been playing music\, traveling a lot\, and was generally trying to find my footing\,” Klein recalls. “I hit the point where I faced a fundamental question— do I keep pursuing music\, solely\, risking the end of a long-term relationship\, perhaps failing to develop myself more broadly\, and likely remaining financially unstable\, or do I settle in a bit too domestic life\, strengthen my relationship with my then-girlfriend (now wife)\, and keep tinkering away at creative works in music and other areas? I chose what felt like a more stable footing. We now have a young daughter and it’s been fulfilling in a lot of ways. I may not be as hungry and endlessly hustling\, but the creative well is far from dry\, and I expect to always be plugging away at songwriting\, other writings\, performing\, and acting.” \nIt feels a bit strange\, Klein notes\, to release these songs amidst the tumult and political backdrop of this period of time\, but the downtime of quarantine and the pandemic seemed like the right time to clear the deck of this material and close out the Low Flyin’ Planes cycle. “I worried momentarily that it’s somewhat tone-deaf to release songs right now that make no reference to racial inequities\, the increasing division in our country\, the suffering amidst coronavirus\, and the great reckoning of 2020\,” he says. “But people need music and art now. We all need something to move us\, uplift us\, and to commune with the ineffable power of music and song.” \nAnd as far as material more suited to the times\, Klein’s been busy at work. “I’ve written a lot since the killing of George Floyd and recorded an album this past summer grappling with this moment of American history\, our past\, and our iniquities. The songs are in production as we speak\, and will hopefully get out there as soon as possible.” \nIn the meantime\, though\, Klein offers this Little Tiger EP\, which has the signature\, evocative production of his records made with Tew\, the talents of all the excellent players who graced the songs\, and a heartfelt journey through an empathetic life seeking stories\, fulfillment\, aliveness\, and awe\, accompanied by a soundtrack of folk-rock n’ roll. \nKlein’s music has garnered praise from Paste\, No Depression\, Georgia Music\, Sing Out!\, Flagpole\, Stomp & Stammer\, Maverick\, and Connect Savannah Magazines\, as well as on numerous Americana blogs worldwide (Americana UK\, Roots Highway\, CtrlAltCountry\, etc.). His second and third releases\, Wounded Electric Youth and Western Tales & Trails\, debuted on the Euro Americana charts at #5 and #4\, respectively. Klein has performed throughout the U.S.\, toured in the UK\, Ireland\, and The Netherlands\, and been a showcasing artist at Folk Alliance. He has shared the stage with a diverse range of acts including Josh Ritter\, Kevin Kinney\, James McMurtry\, Okkervil River\, Abigail Washburn & the Sparrow Quartet featuring Bela Fleck\, Shawn Mullins\, Jim Lauderdale\, Robert Ellis\, Steep Canyon Rangers\, Shovels & Rope\, and more. \nKlein’s records have featured a who’s-who of talented musicians from Athens and beyond\, including producer\, engineer\, drummer\, and vocalist Bronson Tew\, Randall Bramblett\, pedal steel maestro John Neff\, David Blackmon (Widespread Panic\, Jerry Reed)\, Lera Lynn\, and Carlton Owens (Cracker). \nIn 2012 Klein released his first ‘world music’ record\, the original Malian Mande collection Dugu Wolo. An associated making-of-the-record documentary film is in the works. Klein is the founder of upstart independent label Cowboy Angel Music and co-founder of the Athens Americana Music Festival in Athens\, Georgia\, held annually from 2007- 2012. He currently hosts the quarterly African Sky Podcast\, discussing issues of Malian history\, culture\, and development with a variety of guests. \nAlso\, a represented Atlanta-based actor\, Klein’s roles have included Amazon’s “Z: The Beginning of Everything” as well as various commercials and indie film projects. He can be seen performing his unreleased song\, “Goin’ Down to Peachtree”\, in the award-winning independent film Born River Bye.

SUMMARY:Mike Mains & the Branches Acoustic Tour LIVE at Canopy + the Roots
DESCRIPTION:Get tickets HERE. \nMike Mains & The Branches is an indie rock band based in Nashville. Since their conception in 2012\, the group has built a reputation for their fantastical instrumentation and unforgettable live performances. Mains began writing songs early in his career between shifts at a casino\, which is an apt illustration of Mains perspective on life: it’s a comedy\, a tragedy\, and a fairytale. \nIt’s that perspective that laces itself throughout the band’s catalogue\, where the songs make you dance while lyrics make you cry. And while the juxtaposition of glitter and gloom should feel confusing\, it renders itself joyfully therapeutic. And that’s their goal—particularly in their live shows—to strap you into a rollercoaster you never want to get off of. \nTheir boisterousness began when founding members Mike and Shannon fell in love\, got married\, and in doing so\, minted the focal experience of the band’s music and lyrics; not just love\, but the swirling highs and the bruising lows of choosing to live life together. After releasing an EP and two full-length albums\, they chose to partner with Tooth & Nail Records on their latest release. The record\, When We Were In Love\, is their most honest yet. Although their agenda remains the same—to combat numbness with joy\, pain\, and wings to fly—this latest pursuit is more of an honest reflection in the struggle to love. The result is an infectious and colorful album full of tragedy\, comedy\, and the freedom to forget fairytales.

SUMMARY:An evening with Blues-Rock 'n Roller from Nashville\, Lauren Anderson\, LIVE in the Roots
DESCRIPTION:PURCHASE TICKETS HERE. \nListen on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/artist/3AoeCSG1zkka1T0WO3dPUJ \nPresave her new album: https://orcd.co/standstill \nLAUREN ANDERSON performed a livestream from Nashville for Canopy + the Roots during the shelter-in-place and joins us again for her third show and a new release\, “Stand Still”. \nLauren Anderson isn’t shy about sharing her influences. Indeed\, there have been any number of classic and contemporary artists that have left an indelible impression on the musical mantra she’s pursued over the course of her career — Bonnie Raitt\, Etta James\, Eva Cassidy\, Nina Simone\, Whitney Houston\, Beyonce\, and the Pointer Sisters\, among them. Yet\, at the same time\, Anderson isn’t bound to any particular parameters. Instead she’s managed to incorporate those influences into a pursuit of her own passion. It’s a musical journey that continues to flourish\, bringing her growing recognition as a celebrated singer and songwriter with her own contemporary credence. \nThat trajectory has accelerated rapidly over the course of the past seven years with the release of three EPs — Do & Hope\, The Game and Won’t Stay Down — and her first full-length album\, 2015’s Truly Me. In the meantime\, the accolades have kept coming. She was named the 2015 Female Vocalist of the Year by the Midwest Music Awards\, took a first-place finish in the 2018 Wing Dang Doodle Competition and watched with pride as The Game became entrenched in the Top 50 of the Billboard Blues chart five weeks in a row. \nThe press took notice as well. Blues Blast Magazine described said of her\, “Lauren has a strong voice with touch of grit.” Rhythm & Booze noted that she has “ a fabulous powerhouse voice you can’t ignore.” Another publication noted: ”With one foot planted in the territory of her influences and the other pointed in an unexplored direction\, she straddles the border between blues\, soul\, and guitar-driven rock & roll\, finding her own sound somewhere in the middle.” \nMeanwhile\, Anderson’s expanded her following while continuing to reap that critical acclaim. A determined dynamo of a performer adept at both blues and ballads\, she’s ready to add to those accolades with her upcoming album Love On the Rocks\, her most fully realized effort to date. Self-produced and due for independent release this summer\, it will be preceded by four singles slated to appear each month prior to the entire album’s appearance in August — “Stand Still” (April)\, “Back to Chicago” (May)\, “Holdin’ Me Down” (June)\, and “Love On the Rocks” (July). Each offering finds her expounding on the soulful\, seductive style that allows her to break down the boundaries between rock\, blues and classic R&B. \nNot surprisingly then\, the new album fully reflects her own singular sound\, courtesy of a varied set of songs that mostly draw from her own experience. Seven of the nine tracks were written during the pandemic\, when Anderson claims she wrote a song a day for three weeks in a row. \n“Keep On\,” the first of the singles\, is a wailing and riveting gospel-sounding entry. It was accompanied by a music video that included stark images of the pandemic: https://youtu.be/dMkF04TOUSo. \nShe describes the stoic yet soulful “Stand Still” as a more Americana-sounding song\, but the message resonates as well. “It’s about what it feels like when you’re stuck and not going anywhere\,” Anderson says. “Still\, that’s okay when you’re there with someone you love.” \nAnderson calls “Love on the Rocks\,” a co-write with Sandy Ramos and Laureen Smith\, a true collaborative effort. “I came up with the chorus\, but then I got stuck so I brought it to those two ladies and together we finished the song\,” she recalls. “Ironically\, this was the last song I chose to include on this album\, and when the band and I went into the studio\, we had yet to run through it together at that point. I wasn’t sure how it would sound with the full band\, but as soon as everyone started jamming on it\, it came alive. I chose to make it the title track\, and it quickly became one of my favorite songs on the album.” \nThe subtle yet sensual “Holdin’ Me Down” falls under the category of a break-up song. “I sent my guys an acoustic version\, and when we got together to run through it before going into the studio\, Hutch\, my bassist\, came with this badass guitar part\,” Anderson explains. “It really solidifies the soulful 90’s-sounding R&B vibe that the song seemed to call for.” \nOther highlights include “Back to Chicago\,” a performance that combines Anderson’s robust vocals and a sassy\, soulful strut with some ripping fretwork from special guest and guitar great Mike Zito. “I’m Done” and “Just F***ing Begun” are propulsive rockers that allow the energy to soar into the stratosphere. On the other hand\, the easy sway of “The Way I Want” and the resilient resolve implied by “Your Turn” help provide a decided shift in tone and tempo. \n“This album is very true to me\,” Anderson reflects. “I was trying to consciously choose songs for this album that worked well together. I definitely feel like I pulled from some of my seminal influences and was able to find them a fit on each of these tunes.” \nMore about Lauren Anderson: \nIt’s hardly surprisingly then that music has been a vital part of Anderson’s life since early on. Born in Chicago\, her interests were nourished by a family where music played an important part. She first delved into it at the age of eight when she began taking classical piano lessons. That\, in turn\, led her to sing in a choir and eventually undertake classical voice training while still in high school. After attaining a bachelors degree in music\, she earned a Masters Degree in Music Therapy from the University of Kansas. \nFollowing her graduation in 2012\, she became a music therapist\, working with children and at-risk youth. Yet while she relished the experience\, she began to realize that live performance was her true calling. She briefly considered becoming an opera singer\, but quickly decided that the world of popular music was more suited to her style. At first she performed solo\, but later she shared her talents with a band. Then\, after recording a pair of singles at the iconic Ocean Way Studio’s on Nashville’s famed Music Row\, she decided to make a permanent move from Kansas City to Music City in 2017. She now tours full time and continues to make music with an energy and enthusiasm that’s fully invested in the new album. \nLove on the Rocks — At a Glance: \nAll songs written by Lauren Anderson \n“Love on the Rocks” co-written by Sandy Ramos & Laureen Smith \nProduced by Lauren Anderson with assistance from the musicians and Taylor Lonardo \nRecorded at Taylor Lonardo Studios \nEngineered\, mixed and mastered by Taylor Lonardo \nDrums – Matt Doctor \nBass – Hutch \nGuitar – Jimi Greene \nKeys/Organ – Kiran Gupta \nStrings – Jon and Liz Estes \nGuest Guitarist on “Back to Chicago” – Mike Zito \nIntimately connect to both artist and venue in our lush\, speakeasy-style\, 100 seat listening room. SUMMARY:Rock n' Roll from artist\, Sylvia Rose Novak LIVE at Canopy + the Roots
DESCRIPTION:Purchase Tickets HERE. \nSylvia Rose Novak has always come out swinging. This is as apparent on the opening track\, “Fallout”\, of her fifth studio album\, A Miss/ A Masterpiece\, as it is in the fact that she’s been releasing a full-length studio LP every two years since 2014. She’s been called prolific more than a handful of times but the Athens\, GA bassist and songwriter simply prefers to think of herself as driven. \n Met with acclaim from publications such as American Songwriter and Billboard\, Novak’s aptly-named 2020 release BAD LUCK carefully bridged the gap between her former life as an Americana artist – a genre that she felt put into because the music industry and fans alike had issues boxing her into one space – and her foray into pure rock and roll. However\, when it comes to A Miss/ A Masterpiece\, Novak is expecting fans of her previous work to leave their preconceptions at the door and realize that the Sylvia Rose Novak they thought they knew is a Sylvia Rose Novak who never was. Novak wants to see her name in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame\, not the Country Music Hall of Fame. She closes her eyes and sees herself selling out Wembley\, not the Ryman. A Miss/ A Masterpiece is deeply reflective of the person and the artist that Novak has always known herself to be. \nIt is high time the world meets her as she was meant to be introduced: in her favorite Black Sabbath tank top\, black jeans\, and a scuffed pair of well-loved motorcycle boots. \n A Miss/ A Masterpiece\, though recognizable in the sense that Sylvia is and always has been a poignant writer with an unshakable sense of rhyme scheme and brilliant imagery\, is far different than anything she’s ever released before. \n The drums hit hard and loud. The bass and guitars are down-tuned and heavy. And Novak’s voice\, though clearly hers\, hasn’t so much matured as it has tapped into something raw and real that’s been buried deep within her all of these years. A Miss/ A Masterpiece is also deeply personal; touching on her fears of nuclear fallout in “Fallout”\, hitting hard notes about reproductive rights in “Stress Fracture”\, offering a glimpse into bipolar depression with “Rage”\, and penning a memoir about the time she was addicted to uppers via “The Window” – a track on which she also played violin for the first time since she put down the instrument in 2019 to focus solely on bass. \n The bass was Novak’s first instrumental love. Though she’s multi-instrumental – having learned everything from Trombone to pedal steel over the last two decades\, something about the bass has called to her since she was twelve years old and first heard the introductory bars to “Sweet Child O’ Mine.” Duff McKagan’s counter-melody reached out to her as if it was an old friend\, a kindred rebel soul. From that moment\, her relationship with the instrument has only grown and is now the bedrock for the sonic rebirth that’s so evident throughout A Miss/ A Masterpiece. \nA Miss/ A Masterpiece\, as well as the follow up singles A Better Euphemism\, Still and Evermore are now streaming on all platforms.

SUMMARY:An Evening with Indie-Folk Artist\, Eliot Bronson\, LIVE at Canopy + the Roots
DESCRIPTION:Get tickets HERE. \n\nOver the course of five albums\, indie folk singer Eliot Bronson has created his own brand of acclaimed Americana. He’s an award-winning songwriter\, a road warrior\, and an internationally-renowned musician with a voice that swoons and sweeps\, championed by everyone from The Baltimore Sun — who’ve hailed him as “a folk singing wunderkind”— to Grammy-winning producer Dave Cobb\, whose work on 2014’s Eliot Bronson and 2017’s James placed Bronson on the same client roster as Jason Isbell\, Chris Stapleton\, and other heartfelt songwriters. \nHe turns a new page with 2020’s Empty Spaces\, a breakup album for the romantics and realists among us. Written after a split from his fiancé and a move from Atlanta to Nashville\, Empty Spaces pairs sharply-written songs about loss\, leaving\, and redemption with quietly cinematic arrangements rooted in electric guitars\, vocal harmonies\, strings\, and Mellotron. Co-produced by Bronson and longtime bandmate Will Robertson\, Empty Spaces shines a light on Eliot Bronson at his most compelling\, punctuating the woozy warmth of “Visitor\,” the heartland pop/rock of “With Somebody\,” and all points in between with the sharpest writing of his career. This isn’t just a record about empty spaces\, after all. It’s a record about the new discoveries that can fill the void. \nGet tickets HERE.

SUMMARY:Scott Low and Betsy Franck :: Original Americana Singer-Songwriters LIVE in the Roots
DESCRIPTION:Americana-Blues-Jazz from singer-songwriters\, Scott Low and Betsy Franck\n\nPurchase tickets HERE. \nScott Low sings songs about things he knows. Since moving from 150-200 shows a year and Athens GA\, Low has founded a fly fishing art music camp\, Hatch Camp and Art Farm. But Scott still sings songs in the American Folk tradition with a touch of Country and Appalachia performing solo or with his band\, The Southern Bouillon. \nWith a wide ranging background stretching from jazz to punk to southern rock\, Low pulls from the things that have shaped him. From Townes and Dylan to Miles and Zappa. But what comes out on stage is an intense rendering of original songs (and a few choice covers). In the summer of 2016\, Scott released THE NEW VINTAGE\, a 2+ year project of songs that fell into the net of Americana/Country and followed it with extensive touring. A more folk album came next with 2018’s BURNING TIRES\, SMOKING GUNS. Then 2020 and Covid brought THE SOUTHERN BOUILLON LIVE. \nInitial comparisons to Jamey Johnson\, Ryan Bingham\, and Hayes Carll have been written by the more Americana press\, but there are touches of Tom Waits\, and Nina Simone that linger in the shadows. \nOver the years Scott has shared the tour stage/road with Jason Isbell\, Chris Stapleton\, Caleb Caudle\, Aaron Lee Tasjan\, Sammy Kershaw\, Shovels & Rope\, Chris Knight\, and many more. For this special performance\, Scott will be performing with his full band.\n \nPlease support original music and culture. And\, please look for Scott Low music and shows near you! \n———————- \nBetsy Franck is a soulful Americana Blues singer\, songwriter\, guitarist\, house concert throwing\, people-connector. Most recently settling in the North GA mountains\, Betsy spent four years in Nashville TN\, and over a decade in Athens\, GA.\, performing and recording (5) studio albums. Franck has shared the stage with a long list of musical favorites from many different genres like Loretta Lynn\, Lucinda Williams\, and John Popper to St. Paul & the Broken Bones\, Bobby Keyes\, and Ray Wylie Hubbard. She has released a collection of singles on her EP entitled “Words”. They can be found on her website www.betsyfranck.com. \nThis year Betsy has begun to tour more than she has over the past decade\, playing solo shows\, full band shows\, and touring with Athens\, GA based rock band “Bloodkin”. She continues to write and is currently putting together material for her next album. \nIn addition to playing her own music and lending her gospel strong vocals to various projects\, she continues to pour energy into keeping live music at the forefront of her efforts through intimate small gatherings called BFranckProductions\, that focus on food\, music and how to bring assistance and awareness to various nonprofit organizations. \nWhether you catch a full band show\, or one of Betsy’s lyrically enchanting solo sets\, you will not be disappointed as this performer embodies impassioned performance at its best. \n

SUMMARY:TALL TALL Trees : Banjo Funk Americana LIVE at Canopy + the Roots
DESCRIPTION:Get Tickets HERE. Save LIVE MUSIC Culture. \nTall Tall Trees is the pseudonym of songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Mike Savino. Moving to New York in the early aughts with aspirations of being a bassist in the city’s vibrant jazz and experimental music scene\, Savino soon switched his focus to banjo and writing songs\, resulting in the eponymous 2009 debut\, Tall Tall Trees. In the decade since\, Savino has toured non-stop\, pioneering a world of psychedelic electric banjo music\, captivating audiences withhis loop-based one man shows\, as well as alongside frequent collaborator\, Kishi Bashi. \nA Wave of Golden Things\, his fourth studio album\, opens with the distant crow of a rooster and takes off in a dust cloud of swirling banjo\, drums and bass. The lead off track\, “The Wind\, She Whispers\,” quickly evolves from a droning mountain melody into full-blown banjo funk\, setting the precedent for an album of unexpected turns. Though the banjo is heavily featured\, the influence of Pink Floyd\, and Cat Stevens can be felt as much as banjo mavericks Earl Scruggs\, and Bela Fleck.Savino\, who self-records and produces his music\, abandoned the heavily-layered textures of 2017’s Freedays for a more organic\, stripped-down approach\, leaving his distinct voice and thoughtful lyrics as the centerpiece. \nDespite the sparse arrangements\, Savino still manages to evoke the sonic imagery and pastoral landscapes that have often been hallmarks of Tall Tall Trees albums. Each of the eight songs that make up A Wave of Golden Things suggest a world unto itself\, from the cosmic country-tinged\, “Ask Me Again\,” to the sprawling underwater lullaby “Deep Feels.”Opting for an immersive experience over a traditional studio\, Savino set up residence and a mobile recording rig on ahemp farm in the Appalachian mountains outside of Asheville\, North Carolina\, where he now resides. Recorded injust under three weeks\, with much of it arranged on the spot\, the album maintains a sense of immediacy\, celebratingraw performance over perfection. “I’m giving up on my expectations\, let them go and see where it takes us\,” Savinosings on “Expectations\,” almost seeming to revel in this experimental process.Savino’s voice\, left unadorned\, can be simultaneously gentle and strong\, at times sage-like in delivery. On thealbum’s closing title track “A Wave of Golden Things\,” his soft spoken meditations on mental health reflect a newmaturity in his song craft and singing. As the song develops\, Savino’s voice gains confidence and his whisperbecomes a fragile cry\, neither full-throated nor fully secure\, but at home in a warm bed of upright piano and echoingtape delay. \n“We all need a little peace and love right now\,” he sings as if he’s at the end of his breath. \nReflective of the dark and challenging times of today\, Savino’s message is ultimately one of hope and finding peace of mind in the chatter of the modern world. The last chorus reaches towards a transcendent beauty in the darkness\,and makes a promise: “a wave of golden things\, it waits for you.”

SUMMARY:The Plate Scrapers :: Progressive Bluegrass LIVE at Canopy + the Roots
DESCRIPTION:Get Tickets HERE. \nThe Plate Scrapers are a dynamic\, progressive bluegrass band from Berryville\, VA. As classic as cast iron\, as space-age as a flying car. The Plate Scrapers are serving up their own flavor of bluegrass by way of a winding wormhole through folk\, jazz\, and rock dimensions. Their latest studio album\, “Destination Horizon” debuted at #9 on the Billboard Bluegrass chart. The Plate Scrapers have provided direct support for Keller Williams\, Seldom Scene\, Larry Keel\, Frank Solivan and Dirty Kitchen\, Cabinet\, Horseshoes and Hand Grenades\, We Banjo 3 and The Kitchen Dwellers. \nBorn from the tradition of Bluegrass jams and potlucks\, The Plate Scrapers — Derek Kretzer (banjo)\, Andrew Jordan (guitar)\, Robbie Mann (fiddle)\, Jody Mosser (dobro)\, and Kevin Johnson (bass) — have been putting in the work and showcasing their love for the genre since 2014. They have since released 3 studio albums\, 3 live albums\, and have toured relentlessly up and down the east coast and into the midwest. In 2019\, they won the Podunk Bluegrass Telefunken Band Contest. They have been featured on WAMU Bluegrass Country Radio\, performed as an IBMA Official Showcase artist\, and their latest release\, Destination Horizon (2020) debuted at #9 on the Bluegrass Album Billboard charts with rave reviews from Bluegrass Today. \nAs a band that strives to maintain a healthy equilibrium between their diverse musical backgrounds and the traditional Appalachian sounds\, they have wowed audiences across the entire spectrum. This progressively minded Bluegrass act truly feels at home on any stage. They’ve provided direct support for bluegrass legends such as The Seldom Scene\, Frank Solivan and Dirty Kitchen\, and Larry Keel. On the other side of that coin\, they aren’t afraid to get weird at a late night festival slot and have become well known for their tastefully balanced and refreshingly diverse song-writing. Catch their live show and you’ll be sure to receive a full helping of hard-driving bluegrass favorites and heart-wrenching country ballads. Dig into their recorded originals\, however\, and you’ll find tracks ranging from thoughtful folk lyricism to gritty tales of harrowing adventure. \nThe Plate Scrapers passion for bluegrass and performing shines thru their music and performances. Such is evident in their musical prowess and creative chemistry on stage\, guaranteeing a unique and immersive experience each time. The band continues to be fueled by loyal fans and an unrelenting drive to continue moving forward…casually. \n“For starters\, they prove their prowess as it applies to their instrumental interplay. That’s quickly proven by the perky pace of the album opener\, Fly With Me\, the driving jam performance of Clangly\, and the energetic undertones of Ancient Mysteries. It’s that frenzy and finesse which stirs up a blustery blend even on many of the more melodic tunes\, although it’s never allowed to overshadow the sentiment found in those songs themselves. Love Song\, Last Train\, and Mountain find the band offering an emotional embrace\, one that rings with sweetness and satisfaction. The appeal is real and\, in turn\, allows for a contemporary connection that transcends style or genre.” \n-Bluegrass Today
